Your first Fall album. Fuck me, welcome to the amazing world of Mark E. Smith. I'd go with A-Sides and expand out from there.

Apparently Fall fans are like Trekkies. There's no such thing as a casual Star Trek Fan.

I can see that... I'll take a look for A-Sides. Now that I know I'm into them, I've got Live from the Witch Trials looming on my horizon. Going back to the beginning. My compulsion to digest bands chronologically is probably going to be the death of me as far as this band goes. Nothing like a challenge!

Question about Yo La Tengo. Are you familiar with their 90s material? If not, you should look into Painful, Electr-O-Pura, and I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One--they're all front-to-back great, in my opinion. And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out is fantastic, too, as you know, and it completes their four-album classic run.

The new one, I think, is the first since then to really hold up in comparison with those four. For me, "Nothing to Hide" and "Periodically Double or Triple" are the standouts. And I agree with you on the three long closers... They're all good, but stacking them like that means they lose some of their impact. On their own, though, the first two "More Stars Than There Are in Heaven" and "The Fireside" (which is lovely, I think) are more interesting than "And the Glitter is Gone", if only because the latter feels a little too familiar.
