Every three months I dedicate at week at pgwp to My Listening Hours, in which I survey the albums I’ve purchased/acquired in the intervening months. Later today and for the rest of this week I’ll be getting into each individual record in one way or another (and, yes, mp3s)—so be sure to keep checking back. At the end of the week I’ll also take a look at what’s coming down the pike in the next three months that has me interested; as well as my overall favorite albums of the year so far. And of course I’d love to hear from you—both what’s been occupying your listening hours and what you’re looking forward to.
First, an overview: this summer I went on a spree, picking up twenty-two albums in the last three months—that’s double my average if you look at the previous MLHs. Of those twenty-two albums, just six were 2007 releases, and another three were albums from recent years that I’ve only just gotten around to picking up. The remaining thirteen albums were musical blind spots. In light of that, you might understand why they were on my mind last week.
Looking at it on paper, the ratio of blind spots to new releases is a little surprising to me, since there were a number of things I was looking forward to this summer. I had previously anticipated nine new albums coming out between July and September; of those, I only picked up two (the New Pornographers and Spoon). Many of the others I’ll likely never get around to picking up, unless they magically fall into my hands (hey, it happens). That said, those two albums I did pick up are both candidates for my best of the year list.
Check back a little later today for the first post—the best of my listening hours this summer.
