My brilliant wife and I have a little inside joke: whenever I'm trying to work up motivation to exercise, or if I'm in the middle of exercising but feel myself flagging, one of us will say "Rafael Nadal wouldn't quit!" Because if you follow tennis at all (now's a good time—the Australian Open is entering its second week right now), you know this to be true. Rafael Nadal does not quit. He plays every point like it's the ultimate point.
All my Fugazi albums are on vinyl. Only I don't have a turntable hooked up in my house and haven't for a few years now—one of those things I've been meaning to get to. So a few weeks ago I downloaded Repeater and In On the Kill Taker from eMusic and am now reminding myself of how amazing this band is and always shall be. It occured to me that Fugazi is the Rafael Nadal of music. These guys played every note like it was the motherfucking note that needed to be played. They didn't mess around: they did the work because the work needed to be done. So if you're ever looking to motivate yourself (and you're not a tennis fan like me), just say to yourself: Fugazi wouldn't quit. Fugazi wouldn't complain. Fugazi would get it done.
