Meet Cooper. He's almost three days old.
We had a little moment, a few hours after he was born late Thursday afternoon. All the doctors and nurses had left us alone and the room was suddenly silent. My brilliant wife said we should put some music on, which suddenly reminded me that we get to choose his first song. This is a ritual you don't really read about; it's not a baptism or a cutting of the cord. But it felt very weighty as I picked up the iPod to run through the menu.
Coop didn't make it through the whole two minutes and forty-seven seconds. He chose instead to sing out.
Dude! Congrats to the 3 of you.

Great choice. There's a good cover of this on the new Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem kids' album Ranky Tanky - great for the whole family, and a good kick-off for a lifetime of exposing kids to GOOD music that's specifically designed for little brains.
Oh, and congrats on parenthood. You're gonna love it.

Congratulations. I had $ on "Good Morning, Captain," but what do I know?

James - ha! Had it actually been morning, maybe that would have been a contender.
Boyhowdy - I'm sure it's a good cover but I think Cat Stevens is pretty kid friendly on his own (based on my own childhood experiences!). Our hope is to keep the "kids music" out of the house for as long as possible, at least until he's of the age that he wants to sing along and know the lyrics and interact with the music. That's the only scenario I can imagine where bona fide kids music seems reasonable. Until then, Iron & Wine, Cat Stevens, Harry Nilsson, and Les Paul & Mary Ford seem to make the whole family happy!
(So far his two favorites seem to be the Everly Brothers and Kings of Convenience.)

Congratulations, heartfeltedly.
I would like to let you know that no song worked better at getting my son to nod off was Lyle Lovett's "If I Had A Boat".
Hmmmm... makes me think that'd be a good posting theme for Star Maker - would the parental contributors be able to come up with songs that work like lullabies but weren't written as such?
Again, he looks beautiful, congratz.

Congratulations and all best wishes. Thanks for sharing this special moment. Cat Stevens is a perfect beginning. I closed my eyes, listened, and thought of great times, musically and otherwise, I've shared with my wife and children. You really put some magic into this post.
